Fritz and Rykie Neethling of No 51 were watching T20 Cricket on a warm evening in March.
The sliding doors to the patio were partly open when Rykie’s keen sense of hearing detected a strange shuffling noise behind them. On careful investigation it turned out to be a young porcupine who had passed behind their backs in the living room and was on its way to their bedroom.
Even more careful persuasion soon had him in the kitchen but by now he was becoming a bit nervous, sprinkling the floor as he went. The smell was not quite like that of a skunk but neither was it pleasant!
Before the incident, this friendly intruder had been around in their garden quite often at night, making a meal of any bulbous plants. It is not put off by the electrified fence at all, probably because its quills are good insulators.
